Young engineers,
a shared commitment.
Founded in Dakar in 2025, Jappo Ocean brings together 11 members and a shared commitment to the ocean. Created by young engineers trained in fisheries sciences, the association connects scientific knowledge with awareness, training, and community action. Our aim is to support the sustainable management of fisheries resources, protect marine and coastal environments, and help future engineers put their knowledge into practice.

Our fields
Four fields.
One shared ocean.
Our members bring together complementary areas of fisheries science, from the use of aquatic resources to the care of the ecosystems that support them.
-
Fisheries
Understanding fishing practices and fisheries resources to support responsible use, sustainable management, and the livelihoods connected to the sea.
-
Aquaculture
Bringing knowledge of aquatic farming systems to conversations about responsible production, environmental care, and the needs of communities.
-
Fish product processing
Understanding how fishery products are handled, preserved, and processed, with attention to quality, value, and reducing avoidable losses.
-
Aquatic ecology and ecosystem management
Studying aquatic environments and the relationships within them to inform the protection of habitats and the management of shared resources.
Our principles
What Guides
Our Action.
We begin with curiosity, reliable information, and a willingness to learn. Our training helps us understand marine and coastal challenges, ask better questions, and explain them clearly before deciding how we can contribute.
The ocean connects fishers, coastal residents, students, and future generations. We believe its care grows stronger when people take part together, with respect for the experiences and needs of those who depend on it.
Scientific knowledge becomes more useful when people can understand and discuss it. Through awareness and training, we aim to make ocean and fisheries topics accessible and help future engineers develop their skills and confidence.
Useful action starts with attention to people and places. We value local experience alongside scientific knowledge, and seek practical ways to contribute through learning, dialogue, and community activities.
Our president
Aziz Diao is a fisheries engineer currently pursuing a PhD at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD). As President of Jappo Ocean, he brings his scientific background to the association’s commitment to sustainable fisheries and marine and coastal protection.
His work is part of a collective effort that connects scientific knowledge, local experience, and action for Senegal’s ocean and coastal communities.
“The ocean reminds me that we are part of something larger than ourselves. Caring for it is a way of caring for one another, and for generations we will never meet.”
